Disability Liberated was curated for Disability Incarcerated, an event hosted by multiple sponsors at UC Berkeley on March 8th – 9th 2015, brings together scholars, students, activists, and community members to map the intersections of policing, imprisonment, and the disabled body. This event seeks to step into the conspicuous void within critiques of the “prison industrial complex” - namely the absence of discussion of disability oppression, despite the disproportionate representation of people with disabilities within prisons and gated institutions.
We expect the Disability Incarcerated event to be at capacity of 200 people. There will be no charge for the event. The space is wheelchair accessible and chemical/scent-reduced.
There are two components to Disability Liberated – an altar, built in part with community participation, 5:30 – 6:30p PST Sun, March 8th, at 120 Kroeber (Ishi) Hall; and a performance 4:30 – 5:30p PST Mon, March 9th, at Booth Auditorium in Boalt Hall. Artistic Leads on the altar are Patty Berne and Micah Bazant. Artists for the performanceinclude Leroy Moore, Kiyaan Abadani, Patty Berne, Nomy Lamm, Lisa Ganser, Todd Herman, Olegario Martinez, and Damon Johnson, as well as possible participants from Central California Women’s Prison in Chowchilla.
