Updates from Our Newest Program Staff
by Ralph DickinsonDear Sins Invalid Community:As the newest member of Sins Invalid’s program staff, I am pleased to update you on Sins’ latest efforts, which include:• Hiring me, Ralph Dickinson, as the Assistant Managing Director for Sins Invalid. I am assisting in many areas, from building up Sins’ YouTube site to applying for grants, to providing administrative and program support. I’m very excited to be working with my friends at Sins Invalid, and I’m happy to share my skills and experience in the fields of education and production with them.• The development of the Sins Invalid Artistic Core, which functions as artistic, political and organizational advisors for Sins Program Staff. We will be interviewing members of the Artistic Core in the very near future. For now, let’s just say that they are all rock stars in the fields of performance, literature and social justice work – check out their bios.• Thanking our funders, especially the AEPOCH Foundation, and to our volunteers without whose support we could not do the great work we do.• Participating in The National Gay Lesbian Task Force’s "Creating Change" conference, known as the largest gathering of LGBTQI people annually, in Denver in January 2009, specifically:
- Co-facilitating a day-long institute on "Empowering People of Faith", with a focus on embodiment, both the gift that it is and the ways in which it becomes a locus of oppression, especially through disability oppression.
- Co-facilitating a 90-minute session with Laura Hershey entitled "Whose Body Is It? Asserting the queer disabled body" where we asked folks to "...look at the dominant political framing of disability, examine its relationship to gender based oppression and racial oppression, and explore a counter-narrative where all bodies and communities are valued."
- Patty Berne being honored with the Empress I Jose Sarria Award for Uncommon Leadership for her history in movement building and her intersectional work in Sins Invalid. A very proud moment for Sins, and for Patty!
- Working with the power team of Mia Mingus and Cara Page to offer an advanced session entitled "Re-envisioning the revolutionary body: Disability, Race, Queerness and the Possibility of Cross-Movement Organizing".
Thanks again to all of you for your support and your participation in Sins Invalid.Ralph DickinsonAssistant Managing Director
